EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- The freeze and thaw cycle is causing problems for area homeowners; roofers were busy Friday afternoon clearing ice off of homes.
Andy Weatherhead, owner of Weatherhead and Sons, was called to an East Grand Rapids home because of a small leak. There was thick snow on the roof and several inches of ice along the eaves. "That's what these guys are doing here, they're making some channels so when it rains tonight, the water can get off the roof."
"Most people say, 'Oh, my roof is bad.' It's not, it's and airflow or insulation problem. This house has very little overhang."
So, what should homeowners be looking for? If you have 5-8 inches of ice on your eaves, you might want to call a professional and get it removed. In this case, the job will cost about $450. The homeowner was also given options on how to prevent the ice build-up in the future.
