Jose Guadalupe Suarez-Cruz
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) - A man who attended New Year's Eve parties uninvited at Off Broadway Apartments in Grand Rapids has been ordered to stand trial for raping a resident at the northwest side complex.
Jose Guadalupe Suarez-Cruz, 29, will stand trial for first-degree criminal sexual conduct and first degree home invasion for the New Year's Day assault.
After Wednesday's preliminary hearing in Grand Rapids District Court, Suarez-Cruz was returned to the Kent County Jail on a $250,000 bond. He's also being held on an immigration detainer.
The victim told police she was sleeping just before 9:00 a.m. when the man entered her bedroom and sexually assaulted her. She followed him out of the apartment building after the attack, got a description and called police.
Several residents of the building, located on 7th Street NW, east of Seward Avenue, said a man matching Suarez-Cruz' description entered apartments the night before and was acting "inappropriately,'' as if he were a guest at New Year's parties.
Grand Rapids police arrested Suarez-Cruz about 12 hours after the assault at a home on Colorado Avenue SE between Adams and Brown streets. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
