Richmond Park in Grand Rapids
GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- If you seek a pleasant place to skate, just look about you. Grand Rapids will soon have three additional outdoor skating rinks.
While they are all temporary, they could become permanent if the public supports them enough. One was under construction Thursday at Richmond Park on the city's northwest side. It's the fourth year the rink has been erected as part of WinterWest, the celebration of winter sports that starts January 24.
Coordinating construction was Kyle Van Strien of Friends of Grand Rapids Parks. "We see this as a great asset to encourage four season neighborhoods, to encourage people to come out and enjoy the parks," Van Strien said Thursday.
The Friends group just completed construction on a pair of other outdoor rinks at Wilcox and Cherry Parks, both on the city's southeast side. They should be ready for the public sometime next week.
Meantime, Rosa Parks Circle downtown is gearing up for this weekend's Great Skate Winterfest, a celebration of skating and winter to benefit area youth who want to skate. It starts Saturday at noon and runs through Sunday at 10 p.m.
