NEWAYGO, Mich. (WZZM) - A $35,000 reward has been offered for information in catching the "respectful robber" of Michigan banks.

The Newaygo County Sheriff's Office released information Wednesday morning about the serial robber who has been robbing area banks since 2011.  The latest robbery was at the Independent Bank in Croton Township on September 3rd of 2013.  The previous robberies were:

  • June 3, 2011 - Lake Osceola State Bank in Luther, Mich.
  • June 22, 2011 - Lake Osceola State Bank in Wellston, Mich.
  • November 15, 2011 - Citizens National Bank in Pellston, Mich.

The suspect has been dubbed the "respectful robber" due to his calm demeanor while committing the robberies.  He has been armed with a handgun and is believed to have used a stolen vehicle in at least two of the robberies.

"This person goes in with a plan, seems to be rehearsed as to what they're going to say, where they're going to go," said Newaygo County Detective Sgt. Adam Mercer.

But the spokesperson for Independent Bank doesn't buy into "Respectful Robber." Trisha Raqupaw told WZZM 13, "It's downplaying the seriousness of being robbed. At the end of the day, he's still terrifying staff. Mothers, grandmothers, and parents."

Police generally don't release the dollar amount stolen from banks. Sgt. Mercel say though on average most robbers walk off with between $4,000 and $8,000, he says this man got well above that.

He says the banks have taken a big hit, and despite what people think, insurance doesn't cover everything.

It's also important to reinforce; Sgt. Mercer says this is not a woman, despite rumors. He says this person has a deep voice, broad shoulders, chest, and tellers' descriptions all point to a man. So that's who you should be on the look-out for.
