GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- A group of Kent County parents held a forum to hear the pros and cons of uniform national education standards.

Last year, 45 states including Michigan, adopted these common core standards for reading and math. The standards are used in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Supporters say common core will allow teachers and students across the country to work with the same curriculum and testing. Opponents worry the common core will take away local control of education and how our children learn.

"The common core standards by many psychologists and pediatricians are considered to be asking children to learn too much, too fast at the elementary ages, and when you get to high school, it's not enough and the children will not actually be prepared for college," said Melanie Kurdys at Thursday's forum.

All public schools in the state of Michigan have adopted the standards, but more private schools are choosing to modify the standards.
