GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) -- The Grandville City council voted Monday night to change its policy on panhandling.
The city had completely banned the practice, but a high court ruled a similar ordinance in Grand Rapids unconstitutional. As a result, city leaders drafted a new policy that specifically says where individuals can not panhandle.
A person must stand at least 15 feet from a entrance or exit, public bathroom or ATM. Private property owners are allowed to post a sign banning panhandling all together.
The city police chief will monitor enforcement of the new ordinance and report back to the city council.
