CANNONSBURG, Mich.-- The blanket of snow is perfect for skiing and snowboarding, but the slopes near Rockford and Kalamazoo remain empty.
Timber Ridge Ski in Gobles, Bittersweet Ski Resort in Otsego, Swiss Valley Ski and Snowboard Area in Jones and the Cannonsburg Ski Area have all closed Tuesday, Jan. 28 because of the extremely cold temperatures. Cannonsburg employees say the decision was made to ensure the safety of guests and employees, who could suffer frostbite easily in such cold conditions. When workers arrived Tuesday morning, it was -8 degrees outside with a wind chill far below that reading.
One Cannonsburg employee says the ski area closed early Monday night, but it's not common for the venue to shut down because of cold temperatures. He says the extreme winter weather has been more of a positive than a negative, with Cannonsburg seeing more traffic than it has in the past two years.
