BARRY COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) - The Barry-Eaton District Health Department is reporting its first flu death of the season.
A Health Department spokesman says the woman died from complications from influenza last week in Kent County, but she was a resident of Barry County. It's unclear what strain of the virus she had.
This is the first influenza death the Barry-Eaton District Health Department has reported since early 2011. Medical Director Robert Schirmer also says flu-like illnesses are circulating at high levels in both counties. The Health Department says three people in Barry County and 12 people in Eaton County have reported having the flu this season.
Health officials recommend anyone over six months old get vaccinated for the flu.
