PLANFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Fire Chief David Peterson detailed challenges his crews faced battling the fire at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Peterson went before the Plainfield Township Commission Monday night to discuss the January 3 fire. It destroyed a large section of the ballpark along the first baseline and was sparked by a space heater.

Peterson listed five challenges, among them, a lack of hydrants, a failed sprinkler system, and a lack of people.

"A lack of people on the initial response, on the best day we probably wouldn't have had enough people on the first response, especially with the amount of fire hose we had to pull," Peterson said.

He also noted the cold weather and the structure design as contributing problems.

The Rebuilding effort is well underway and the ballpark will hold its home opener on April 8.
