GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WZZM) Simply put, Jenny Holsem says it "blew my mind."

The Calvin Christian High School senior has been a world traveler in her high school years. She's been to Guatemala and Africa on mission trips that she says left a big impression on her. "The stuff that they live in was just trashy and what we could consider unacceptable in America. And to see how happy they are, how content they are with it was crazy for me to see."

The mission trips gave Jenny a chance to make contact with children who have very little. "We visited a blind school and spent time with them for a day and played a game with them. Everyone that could actually see was blindfolded. And the game is like soccer except you hit the ball with your hand and you couldn't move out of this box. The ball has bells in it and when it comes near you you can hear it but you can't see it. So we played against one of the blind teams and they kicked our butts. It was 7-0 or something."

Jenny is our WZZM/Meijer Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of May 14th. She's a decorated student-athlete at Calvin Christian, winning numerous awards in soccer and volleyball while also being involved in equestrian and dance. A 4.0 student, Jenny plans to study nursing at Calvin College. "I've always grown up wanting to be a nurse," she told WZZM. "After going to Africa, I realized how much I enjoy taking care of people and helping others and I think that's a good challenging career that I would enjoy."

WZZM and Meijer congratulate Jenny Holsem and wish her continued success!
