Zeeland East senior Leah Ritsema
ZEELAND, Mich. (WZZM) - WZZM and Meijer are pleased to recognize Zeeland East High School senior Leah Ritsema as our Meijer Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of September 17th.
Leah enters the 2012 season as one of the top swimmers in West Michigan. Three times in her career she has earned all-conference and all-state honors. Leah swims the maximum four events in most meets and says her times have improved for the start of her senior year. "Recently I have been swimming a lot faster. I think I'm just getting stronger as I get older. The longer you stick with it, the harder it is to give it up I think."
Undecided on a college choice at this time, Leah figures to have several options. A 4.01 student, she has never earned less than an A- in any course in high school. She says she has enjoyed the closeness of two high schools that sit side-by-side. "Zeeland East is unique in that we have a combined school with Zeeland West. Even though at football games I'm cheering for Zeeland East, my friends are from both schools. I walk between schools and I have two of my academic classes at West. Zeeland also has an awesome performing arts program. Our Zeeland High Players are second to none in my opinion. We also have an extensive dance program which I'm a part of. I started dancing when I was three years old. I never really stopped, it's something I've always loved to do. Every other year we get a chance to travel to Disney World to perform at Downtown Disney. It's really fun, it's a great experience."
Leah says AP English is her favorite subject and might like to study communications in college while competing for her school's swim team.
WZZM and Meijer congratulate Leah Ritsema for her hard work and wish her continued success!
