Montague's Kristopher Kieft, our Meijer Scholar Athlete of the Week.

MONTAGUE, Mich. (WZZM) - A severe knee injury threatened to ruin Kristopher Kieft's high school athletic career, but the Montague senior returned to start for the Wildcats football team in 2012.

Kieft suffered a torn ACL and meniscus tear during the first scrimmage of his junior season in football.  Doctors said he would likely need two years to fully recover, but he was back on the field to start his senior season.

"It took a lot of hard work and perseverance and dedication working in the weight room," Kieft says.  He credits his trainer with helping him return to competition.

While rehabbing his knee, Kieft was able to maintain academic excellence.  He carries a 4.0 GPA at Montague High and was named second-team All-State for academics.

He plans on attending CMU or Wayne State to study neuroscience or radiology.

Kieft is a two-sport athlete at Montague High School, playing basketball and football.  He was the starting free safety for the Wildcats this past season.
