Grace Bible College Tigers
WYOMING, MICH. (WZZM) - West Michigan is filled with college basketball teams, but in 2009, only one is a national champion.
Grace Bible College, with an enrollment of less than 200 students, won the NCCAA Division II National Title last weekend after a 74-72 win over Valley Forge in Springfield, MO.
Friday, the team was honored with a parade starting at the intersection of 28th Street and De Hoop Avenue and ending at the school's campus in Wyoming.
"I'm trying to think if I've ever been in a parade," said GBC Head Coach Gary Bailey. "I've stood on the sides plenty of times. It was a short parade but people came out of their homes and watched."
Saturday's win gave Bailey his second championship at GBC. The Tigers also won the 2006 tournament. But this was his first championship parade.
"You go back to your childhood and you're playing sports and you're watching a college team on TV and playing for a National Championship," said GBC guard Brandon Herlein. "You're like, someday I want to do that. We got the chance to do that this year. It's like a dream come true."
The Tigers finished the season on a 19-game winning streak.
