Grace Bible senior Allen Durham
WYOMING, Mich. (WZZM)- Overlooked and perhaps unwanted coming out of Wyoming Park High School in 2006, Allen Durham admits his list of college suitors was small. So small, he says he'd never heard of the school he eventually chose. "In the beginning, when they first started talking to me, I was like, 'what is Grace Bible College? Where is it?'"
Durham soon learned the small school is located near 28th Street and Clyde Park in Wyoming. And though the Tigers compete at a small level (NCCAA Division II), they do compete well. Last year, they captured their third national championship in five years with Durham leading the way as an All-American. Durham has since become the school's all-time leading scorer and rebounder and is sure to go down as the finest player in the program's history.
His coach, Gary Bailey, says he won't be ready for Durham to graduate and leave the program this year. "I was talking to some of the other area coaches, joking with them one day and they said, 'How are you going to manage when Durham's gone?' I said, 'I've started my therapy now," so I don't want to wait until that time so I'm ready for it when it comes next year."
In the meantime, Durham has done nothing to disappoint this season. He's averaging a team-high 21.3 points per game and ten rebounds per game. He says he's likely going to get a chance to play professionally next year in Europe and then someday put his degree in criminal justice to use. Until then, he and the other Tigers hope to capture a third straight NCCAA national title this year. And make sure that everyone knows about the little school that Durham himself had once never heard of.
